Cyanotype

Cyanotype is a simple, sun-powered/light printing process that uses light to transfer images or objects onto paper, creating rich blue, one-of-a-kind prints.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Cyanotype chemicals (Part A
  • Watercolor/cotton paper (300gsm preferred)
  • Printed photo negative (on transparency)

  • Glass or acrylic sheet

  • Sunlight

  • Tray of cool water

Step 1: Mix

Combine equal parts of Solution A + B in low light.

Step 2: Coat

Brush an even layer onto your paper.
Let dry completely in the dark.

Step 3: Place the Negative

Lay your transparency negative directly on the dried paper.
Secure tightly with glass so it stays flat.

Step 4: Expose

Place in direct sunlight for about 5–15 minutes.
The paper will shift from green to bronze/gray.

Step 5: Rinse

Rinse in cool water for 5–10 minutes.
The blue will appear and deepen as it oxidizes.

Step 6: Dry

Lay flat to dry. Color fully develops within 24 hours.That’s it — you’ve transferred your image using light itself.
